After the cover, your book description is often the thing that decides whether a reader buys. It appears on retailer pages, your author website and in promotions, so it is worth getting right.
1. Start with a strong hook
Most readers only see the first few lines before deciding whether to read on. Open with the central question, conflict or promise of your book, not with background or praise for yourself.
2. Write for your reader
Think about who the book is for and what they want. Fiction readers want to feel the story and stakes. Non-fiction readers want to know what problem the book solves and what they will learn.
3. Keep it focused
Introduce the main character or topic, the challenge, and what is at stake. You do not need to give away the ending or explain every plot detail. Short paragraphs are easier to read on a phone.
4. Use natural keywords
Include words and phrases your readers might search for, such as the genre, setting or topic, but only where they fit naturally. A description stuffed with keywords reads badly and puts readers off.
5. Add useful proof carefully
If you have genuine endorsements, awards or credentials, mention them briefly. Only include real, verifiable ones.
6. Finish with a call to action
End with a simple invitation, such as a line encouraging readers to buy or sample the book.
7. Format for easy reading
Where the retailer allows it, use short paragraphs and light formatting to make the page easy to scan. Always preview how the description looks on both desktop and mobile.
Reuse your final description on your website’s book page, and read our guide to Book SEO for authors for more ways to help readers find your book.
