How Much Does an Author Website Cost in the UK? What Affects the Price

Authors often ask what an author website costs, and the honest answer is that it depends on what you need. A single-page site with a bio and a buy link is a very different project from a full site with several books, a blog, a newsletter and an online store. This guide explains what drives the price so you can budget sensibly and compare quotes fairly.

What affects the cost

Size and structure

The number of pages matters, but so does what each page has to do. A page for each book, an About page, a media kit, events and a blog all add design and content work.

Custom design or a template

A site built from a template and adjusted to your cover and colours costs less than a fully custom design. A template can work well if your needs are simple. Custom design suits authors with a distinctive brand or a series that needs its own look.

Selling directly

An online store adds product pages, payments, tax, shipping and legal pages. It also needs more testing. If you want print-on-demand orders fulfilled automatically, for example through Lulu, that is custom integration work and is usually quoted separately.

Content and images

Someone has to write and edit the copy, prepare cover images and source or commission photography. If you supply finished content, the project is quicker. If you need help shaping it, allow for that.

Integrations

Connecting a newsletter tool, retailer links, analytics and Search Console is part of a proper set-up. More integrations mean more configuration and testing.

Search optimisation

Basic SEO, such as titles, descriptions, clean structure and speed, should be built in. Ongoing SEO, such as keyword research and regular articles, is a separate service. See our guide to Book SEO.

Costs beyond the build

  • Domain name: an annual renewal.
  • Hosting: a monthly or yearly fee. Faster, better-supported hosting costs more than the cheapest plans.
  • Maintenance: WordPress, themes and plugins need regular updates and backups.
  • Premium plugins or themes: some carry yearly licences.
  • Email tools: many newsletter services are free at small list sizes and charge as your list grows.

DIY, freelancer or agency?

Website builders are cheaper up front and suit very simple sites, though you may outgrow them. A freelancer or agency costs more but can give you a faster, more tailored site, proper SEO foundations and support. The right choice depends on your time, budget and technical confidence.

How to get a useful quote

Before you ask for prices, write down how many books you have, what pages you want, whether you need a store, what you can supply yourself and when you want to launch. Then ask each provider what is included, how many rounds of changes you get, who owns the site and accounts, and what ongoing costs to expect.

Plan before you spend

Our book launch readiness checklist helps you see what you already have. When you are ready, see how our author website service works or request a quote and we will give you a clear scope and price.
