Colour is one of the first things people notice about a brand. The right palette makes your business look consistent and trustworthy across your logo, website, social media and printed materials. Here is a practical way to choose one.

1. Start with your audience and industry

Think about who you want to reach and what feeling you want to create. Look at competitors to see what is common in your market, then decide whether to fit in or stand out.

2. Pick one main colour

Your primary colour appears most often, for example in your logo and buttons. Choose one that is distinctive and suits your personality. Remember that colour meanings can differ between cultures, so consider all the places you serve.

3. Add supporting colours

Most brands need a small set: one primary colour, one or two secondary colours and a few neutrals such as white, grey or black. Too many colours make a brand feel messy.

4. Check contrast and readability

Text must be easy to read against its background. Test your colour combinations, especially for buttons and body text, so your website is accessible to as many people as possible.

5. Test in different places

See how the palette looks on a website, a phone screen, a printed card and a social media profile picture. Colours can look different on screen and in print.

6. Write it down

Record exact colour values for web and print, and note where each colour should be used. A simple brand guide keeps everything consistent as your business grows.
