Updates are one of the most important parts of keeping a WordPress site secure. Many successful attacks use known weaknesses in outdated software that already has a fix available.
Why updates matter
- Security: fixes for vulnerabilities are released in updates.
- Stability: bug fixes prevent errors and crashes.
- Compatibility: new versions keep working with newer PHP and browsers.
- Features and speed: improvements arrive over time.
The risk of waiting
Delaying updates for months gives attackers more time to find your site. It also makes later updates riskier, because you jump across many versions at once.
A safe update routine
- Take a full backup first. See our backup guide.
- Update on a staging copy for important or complex sites.
- Update plugins and themes first, one at a time or in small groups.
- Update WordPress core.
- Check key pages, forms, checkout and the admin area.
- Clear caches and re-test.
What if something breaks?
Restore the backup, then update the plugins one by one to find the cause. Check whether the plugin is still maintained and compatible.
Remove what you do not use
Deactivated plugins and old themes can still be vulnerable. Delete them completely.
Automatic updates
WordPress can update minor releases automatically, and you can enable automatic updates for plugins and themes. This suits simple sites, though complex sites usually benefit from testing first.
Be careful with where plugins come from
Install plugins from the official directory or trusted vendors. Avoid pirated or nulled premium plugins, which often contain malware.
