Your logo appears on your website, invoices, social media profiles, packaging and business cards. A good one is recognisable at a glance and works everywhere you need it. Here are the principles that separate a logo that works from one that causes problems later.
1. Keep it simple
The most memorable logos are usually simple. Too many shapes, colours or effects make a logo hard to recognise and hard to reproduce. If it cannot be described in a sentence, it may be too complicated.
2. Make sure it works at every size
Test your logo as a tiny social media icon and as a large banner. Fine details that look good on a big screen can disappear when the logo is small.
3. Check it in black and white
A strong logo still works in a single colour. You will need this for stamps, embroidery, newspaper adverts and any place where full colour is not possible.
4. Choose typography with care
The lettering in your logo carries personality. Pick fonts that are easy to read and suit your industry, and avoid trends that will look dated quickly. Make sure you have the right licence for any font used.
5. Use colour on purpose
Colours influence how people feel about a brand, but meanings vary between cultures and industries. Choose a palette that fits your audience and stays readable against both light and dark backgrounds.
6. Aim for originality
Avoid copying competitors or relying on generic stock symbols. An original mark is easier to protect and easier for customers to remember.
