Phishing is when someone pretends to be a trusted company or person to trick you into giving away passwords, codes, money or access. It arrives by email, text message, messaging apps and phone calls. Business owners are targeted because their accounts are valuable.
How phishing messages look
- A sense of urgency, such as your account will be closed today
- A link that goes to a look-alike website
- A request to confirm your login, payment details or a code
- Unexpected invoices or attachments
- A sender address that is slightly different from the real one
Fake phone calls
Calls from unknown numbers may claim to be from your bank, your hosting company, Google or a security team. Caller ID can be faked, so a familiar-looking number is not proof.
- Do not share personal information, passwords or codes.
- Never install remote access software because a caller tells you to.
- Hang up and call back using a number from the official website or your card.
- Be wary of anyone pressuring you to act immediately.
Messaging app scams
On WhatsApp and social media, scammers pretend to be clients, suppliers or even friends. They ask you to click a link, send a code or move a payment. Verify through another channel before acting.
What to do when you get one
- Do not click links or open attachments.
- Go to the company’s website by typing the address yourself.
- Report the message and delete it.
- If you clicked or shared something, follow our emergency checklist.
Build habits that protect you
- Use a password manager and unique passwords.
- Turn on two-factor authentication.
- Keep software and devices updated.
- Train staff and anyone with access to recognise scams.
