Core Web Vitals are Google’s way of measuring how a page feels to a real visitor: how fast it loads, how quickly it responds and whether the layout jumps around. They are one of several signals Google uses, and a faster site is also simply better for visitors. Here is what each metric means and what you can do about it.

The three metrics

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

LCP measures how long the main content of the page, usually a large image or heading, takes to appear. Google considers 2.5 seconds or less to be good.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

INP measures how quickly the page responds when someone taps, clicks or types. Google considers 200 milliseconds or less to be good.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

CLS measures unexpected movement of the page while it loads, such as a button jumping just as you tap it. Google considers 0.1 or less to be good.

How to measure them

  • Google Search Console has a Core Web Vitals report based on real visitor data.
  • PageSpeed Insights shows both real-world data, when available, and a lab test with suggestions.
  • Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools lets you test pages as you work.

Remember that lab tests are a snapshot, while real-world data reflects what your visitors actually experience.

Practical fixes for LCP

  • Compress and correctly size images, and use modern formats such as WebP
  • Do not lazy-load the main image at the top of the page
  • Use good hosting and page caching
  • Reduce render-blocking CSS and scripts

Practical fixes for INP

  • Remove plugins and scripts you do not need
  • Delay heavy third-party scripts such as chat widgets and trackers
  • Keep page builders and sliders lean

Practical fixes for CLS

  • Set width and height on images and embeds
  • Reserve space for banners, ads and cookie notices
  • Load fonts in a way that avoids sudden text shifts

WordPress-specific tips

On WordPress sites, the biggest wins usually come from image optimisation, caching, trimming plugins and choosing a lightweight theme. Change one thing at a time and test, because optimisation settings can occasionally break layouts or forms.

Do not chase a perfect score

A perfect lab score is not the goal. Aim for pages that load quickly and feel stable for real visitors, then keep content and search optimisation in view. For a technical review of your own site, see our SEO services or our technical SEO checklist.
